Suzuki Daisetsu's View of Buddhism and
the Encounter between Eastern and Western Thought
|
Prof. Michael Pye, Ph.d, Dr.Th. h.c.
Visiting Professor at Ōtani University, Kyōto, Japan
Professor at Marburg University, Germany (retired)
Former President, International Association for the History of Religions
After studying modern languages and western theology
at Cambridge University, Michael Pye spent several years in Japan,
subsequently taking up research in the comparative study of religions.
While having a specialised knowledge of Japanese religions he has
taken a broad interest in contemporary religion in East and South-East
Asia, and also in questions of religious dialogue.
He has carried out research into various aspects of Buddhism and translated the
works of the critical Japanese thinker Tominaga Nakamoto (1715-46).
While teaching on Buddhism in European universities he became quite
familiar with the works of Suzuki Daisetsu, and this lecture provides
a thoughtful appraisal of Suzuki's contribution to the western reception
of Buddhism and the encounter between eastern and western thought.

- SUMMARY - |
The study of religions is a science that seeks to compare different religions in an objective manner. Problems concerning religions, such as the relationship between fundamentalism and politics, are increasing in number and importance these days and the question of the social responsibility of academics is increasingly being raised. These lectures will consider, in a global perspective, what kind of social responsibility specialists in the study of religions have and in particular how this should be related to religious education.
